The birth of a child in Germany not only brings great emotions but also a whole list of formalities that should be handled calmly – ideally even before the child is born. The German support system for parents is extensive and generous, but requires knowledge of certain regulations. Here, one can learn when maternity protection applies, how maternity benefit and parental allowance work, as well as the amount of child benefit and where the application must be submitted. This allows the first months with the child to be planned more easily – without stress and without the loss of funds that one is simply entitled to.
Maternity Protection in Germany – How Long Can One Pause and Who Pays the Salary?
In Germany, the protection period for expectant mothers is not just a formality but represents real financial and professional support, enabling a calm preparation for childbirth and the first weeks with the child. The provisions of the Maternity Protection Act (Mutterschutzgesetz, MuSchG) clearly stipulate that six weeks before and eight weeks after childbirth, the employer may not demand employment. In cases of premature births, multiple pregnancies, or a child with a disability, this period is automatically extended – even up to twelve weeks after birth. It is important that if a doctor determines that the work could endanger the health of the mother or child, an individual employment ban can be issued, which also protects outside these periods.

During the protection period after birth, maternity benefit, a benefit from the health insurance fund, is due instead of the salary. It is paid for the entire eight weeks after birth (or longer if the pregnancy was a multiple pregnancy or the child was born prematurely). However, many women do not know that this is not the end of the support – the employer supplement is added to this amount. This ensures that income during maternity leave practically corresponds to the work remuneration. The employer pays the difference between the maternity benefit and the actual net earnings.
If there is no insurance in the statutory health insurance fund, the benefit can be obtained from the Federal Office for Social Security (BAS) – in this case, a one-time payment of up to 210 euros is made. Self-employed or voluntarily insured persons receive a benefit equivalent to the sickness benefit.
It is also worth knowing that the employer must adjust the employer supplement if the salary was increased during the reference period. All this is to avoid financial losses just because one has become a mother. And most importantly – this supplement is fully reimbursed to the employer by the health insurance fund, so it is not a “favor” of the company. It is a right enshrined in German labor law.
Parental Allowance after Birth – Who, How Much, and How Long Can the Parent Benefit Be Received?
After the maternity leave period expires, parental allowance can be applied for in Germany – one of the most important benefits in the German family system. It is money for parents who decide to restrict or completely stop working to care for the newborn child. It is granted regardless of whether one is a mother or father – the only requirement is that one resides in Germany, lives in the same household with the child, and personally cares for it. From 2025, an income limit will also apply – if the annual income exceeds 175,000 euros, parental allowance will not be granted.
The amount of parental allowance depends on the previous net income and ranges from 65 to 100% – the lower the income before birth, the higher the percentage of the benefit (for incomes below €1,000, parental allowance can even be 100%; maximum €1,800 per month). It can be chosen how the benefit is to be received – as basic parental allowance (up to 14 months) or parental allowance plus, which lasts longer but in a lower amount. Interestingly, parents can share this time among themselves and combine the benefit with a partial return to work. This offers great flexibility and allows the support to be adapted to the individual family situation.
It should only be noted that if maternity benefit was received during the maternity leave period, it will be deducted from the parental allowance to avoid double payments. This keeps the system transparent, and the first months with the child can be planned without stress.
Child Benefit and Other Family Allowances – What Support Is Available After Birth in Germany?
In addition to maternity protection money or parental allowance, there is also entitlement to child benefit, the famous family allowance paid monthly to every parent in Germany. Its amount is independent of income and amounts to 255 euros monthly per child. The application is submitted to the family benefits office, preferably immediately after receiving the child’s birth certificate. For many families, this is a steady and predictable support that helps cover daily expenses – from diapers to kindergarten. If both parents live and work in Germany, one of them receives the child benefit – the one who submits the application first.
However, it is worth knowing that child benefit is only the beginning. In the German system, there are also other family allowances, such as the child supplement for families with low income – additionally, if there is more than one child, a sibling bonus can be claimed, which increases the amount of parental allowance.
Each of these programs has its own criteria and requires separate applications, but they all have a common goal – to provide financial support in the first years of parenthood. The applications are not complicated, but require patience – the authorities often ask for additional documents, so it is advisable to prepare everything in advance: birth certificate, registration certificate, proof of income, and account number. This avoids delays and allows the funds to be received more quickly.
